Nancy began her career as a modern dancer and choreographer. Quickly she found that her most rewarding experiences were when she was able to work with young people. After graduating with an MA in Dance Education, she served for several years as an Artist in Residence for the Turner School District in a Kansas City. In this position, Nancy directed a children’s dance company and wrote a handbook for classroom teachers on integrating movement into the general curriculum.
In Rochester, Nancy worked as a Wolf Trap Artist, weaving dance, music and drama into early childhood programs. Her fascination with using movement and the arts in the general curriculum led her to pursue elementary education certification. In addition to some wonderful years spent as a classroom teacher in the primary grades at Cobblestone School, Nancy has taught dance at the University of Rochester, Urban Choice Charter School and at School #35.
Nancy is thrilled to be the dance specialist at Renaissance Academy Charter School of the Arts as it offers a unique and exciting opportunity to partner with classroom teachers and use movement to reinforce and extend the concepts that the children are learning in their classrooms. In addition to arts integration, the students study different forms of dance, including creative movement, social, and world dance. They also learn basics of modern dance technique, do a variety of kid friendly hip hop dances, play movement games and work with props.
Walk by the dance space, which is easy to do as it is out in the open in the heart of the school, and you might see children dancing the life cycle of a tree-from seed to giant oak, or using their bodies to create the shapes they’re studying in a geometry unit. You may see small groups of children working on a choreographic project. In order to foster community, responsibility, investment in learning, and respect for the creative voices of the children, Nancy often enlists her students’ help in leading movement activities and in contributing their unique ideas. Her goal is to create a safe and joyful learning environment where the children are challenged and inspired.
